I also use Pingdom to check my website every minute and the uptime is fantastic.

Did you make the flash yourself or is it a template?

On the subject of Pingdom et. al. it's interesting looking through the logs and seeing just how many HTTP requests are made by such services!

Our own site receives nearly as much traffic in terms of monitoring than it does in visitors, which is a pain! Maybe it's so competitors can catch us out or something

That would annoy the hell out of me. Cant you block by IP?

It's funny you should say that, I've often considered subscribing to such a service but always worry I'd slow down the websites I was trying to keep an eye on by sending so much traffic to the same server!!

Could do but with the number of monitoring stations, different services, and changes in IPs it's a little much hassle really. Useragent filtering does a good enough job

I bet if all the users of Vida servers agree to block monitoring services, SE robots and things like scrappers our sites would be bursting monitors all over the place :-)

Personally I would like the idea of routing via useragent and send them all to an emty server that tells them all the need to know.

I'm not sure about this technical things, but I read some article saying that service like Pingdom only read the header, not loading the full page of our website. So the bandwith consumed will be minimize and our website only need to process some okay code, code 200 if I'm not wrong.

But some other website monitoring, something-uptime dot com (Sorry forgot the name) have option to check the full page and look for some word in our webpage. This kind of service may take a lot of bandwith and process.

I agree with Dominic.
It is much hassle to block the IPs.

Also, there is services which allow every person install the monitoring service in his computer then run it to monitor others website, and in return he can have his websites monitored by others. Sound like peer to peer monitoring (CMIIW).
