Hiya, new here. OK, so I currently have a vps, similar set up to your vds40. Since signing up in December with my current host I have had many various problems, although May and June were blissfully free of all problems, before they started again. A couple of times when server load is high they have said that it must be the scripts I run. The authors of which say rubbish. I have a fair number of sites. Most of them run on scripts - wordpress, price tapestry and wsnlinks - some domains are just on wordpress, some on 2 scripts and a couple on all 3. I have a cron job on those domains that run price tapestry which runs overnight to update datafeeds. My sites are NOT busy and do not have a lot of visitors (yet - I'm working on that one!) This has been my set up for some time now, so if it worked ok with no problems for just over 2 months I am puzzled to think why the current host has a couple of times thought it is my scripts causing a problem. Although I do get other, what seem to be "excuses" too. OK, that's me. I guess I'm scared of moving, but today got fed up again. Server load was like a yo-yo all afternoon. When it got to 25 I got onto their online chat. He told me "The load on your vps is much high" (no kiddin'!). After more prompting was told he could not access vps because of the high load. After quite a bit more prompting he suggested rebooting, to which I said ok. 2½ hours later vps was still down. Contacted chatline again and was told vps was in start process. I asked why it had taken 2½ hours so far as it should be less than 30 mins and, well cut a long story short, they eventually said "some network issue with main hardware node" and after more prompting "issue with with datacenter" and after yet more prompting "They are working to resolve the issue". Now, Do you think that Vidahost would be right for me? I know, I know, big question, leading question! I know somebody who has just signed up and praises vidahost. |

Welcome to the forums How much RAM does the VDS have, and how busy is the system - how many MySQL queries/sec and Apache hits/second? Generally CPU usage isn't the problem with VDSs unless you have a lot of tasks running (which the high load could indicate); usually systems will struggle due to the RAM limitations. Very rarely the host node can have problems (a lack of I/O, a crash etc) but usually they don't have too much impact on individual VDSs. I tend to suggest shared hosting solutions over VDSs for sites which don't require PCI compliance or any other non-standard features (eg - bespoke applications/services). Let me know the answers to the above (here or via taylor@vidahost.com) and I'll see what we can do for you

That sort of stuff would really get to me. Hate it when people make excuses, I would rather people say "I can't be bothered" or "I don't know what's wrong". At least then I can find an alternative. Having said that Vidahost have looked after my hosting for about 3 yrs now and the only real chat I've had with them is how I can upgrade! don't be scared mate, make the move and give yourself less stress and more support.

Thanks! Hey Munday, perhaps I should use different names <VBG> Thanks for the welcome Thanks Cybernautix. Good to hear you've not had any probs in 3 years! I have taken the plunge and signed up with a reseller account on the advice of Dominic. Now the task to gradually move over all my sites! I have elected to do it manually, glutton for punishment is me! Cheers Jill |
