I used to use Adsense quite a lot a couple of years back on one of my travel blogs (I was travelling around New Zealand at the time). My blog back then got quite a following and earned a few pounds a day from it (people obviously clicking to find out more etc). Now I get so few impressions and I am lucky to make 5p a month lol. |

In my opinion it depends on where you are placing your adsense links. People are wise to them now, they spot them, know what they are. It used to be that the average user didn't understand what adsense was, lets put this into perspective - my mother, she's 67, not very internet savvy, or at least I thought she wasn't mentioned to me about a local garden center website, - she said, and I quote "He's gone and put all them advertising links on his site, well I can't even be bothered to read a single one of them, cheapskate". I'm not saying my mother is the archetypal internet user, nor is she part of the main demographic. But she highlights a point. People went beserk with adsense links, putting them on every page every header every footer. And maybe users are sick of seeing them. Like surfing TV channels during the ad-breaks. The only way you'll start making some serious money from Adsense again is if Adsense starts thinking outside the box - like memorable TV commercials, the standard text format is cliche now, Adsense needs to up it's game. Google/YouTube did start and then later stop video AdSense, I'm not sure of the politics why they stopped this, but I will assume that it's got to do with money, it cost too much to support it against the revenue that it earned. But again I wave my hands in the air and say "AdSense needs to up it's game" - imagine a totally hysterical advert like the .... umm, compareyourmeerkat.com, imagine that ad as video credit only available through AdSense? It would earn serious money wherever it was right, people would watch it again and again. Am I making AdSense? Last edited by von; 27-04-2010 at 02:40 PM. |

On my blog I am now earning around £1.50 per day. When I first started allot I played allot with the location of the ads so think location is a big factor. I added text ads below the main navigation and below each post. Image ads above each post and top and bottom of sidebar. I have Google Search to the site which also has ads in the search results. and Finally I use Feedburner for my RSS feeds which also contain ads. If you want some location ideas feel free to have a nosey at my blog: Chris Lowthian - Technology and Computing News

I must say Chrissy your ads placement is spot on. It's nicley masked into the design of your site and not obvious tot he user that they are immediatley google ads. I know we're not trying to trick users here. But it's the generic blue and green google ads that people immediatley recognise and avoid I think.

The first post wasn't really about ad placement but the fact that on some days clicks seem to mean nothing. I've found if your using wordpress placing is key but not as key as the text you have around the advert. In wordpress you can set the front page to whatever you want, if you are showing just your most recent posts you maybe missing a trick. Use google keywords research to find high value keywords and the write a post or page on that subject matter. Set that content to your homepage as a sticky if a post. Now on you homepage google is far more likely to show high value adverts and your income your income should go up. Just change the post once a month or so to keep it fresh. Why in adsense admin, make sure you get your setting right for what you want to displace or not, a site can be flooded to dating adverts and breast implant ads, just set adsense not to show that type of low click stuff. Also I find text links are far more earning then images so I don't show images now, although some of the new video adds earn well I think they have more ability to drive visitors away from my sites.

As for text vs image ads I found that when I was displaying text ads my clicks went right down, but when I switched to image only ads the clicks went up a fair bit. All I can think of is that people can't be bothered to read text ads so much

The main thing you have concider over all of this is that your visitor profile will have most effect on your clicks. If you tend to run a site where the less expericed surfer turns up then I suspect those are the most likely to click away to tempting ads. But also if your traffic mainly comes from google searchs then it's only natural that search will be continued via your adsense offerings. I would suspect forums offer the least access to income as in general you are preaching the same content to the same people day after day. One of my site www.alternativestoEbay.com/blog has these figures so far this month, I don't know how they compare but I run a lot of site and this allows a lot of experimentation :-) 17,645 imp 209clicks £43.38 As of today the stats on vistor to get that are ; 3,349 visits 5,486 pages views So I make that about £0.0125p (ish) per visit :-) Thats just a bit less then the page views per visit so for every pageview I get a penny :-)
