- B) a few hundred

- C) Anything upto 50k

Google is a rubbish search engine, the last thing I would want is to replicate their search process.

Well - where are you hoping to get with it? Are you going to target a particular niche? I don't really see the sense in trying to build a 'general' search engine. Your chance of competing with heavyweights like Google is somewhere between non-existent and remote, probably a lot closer to the former.
