Where do I start ? options on investment I might concider; - A) no cash input - B) a few hundred - C) Anything upto 50k Answers not on the back of a stamp but by pressing the reply button please ;-)

Well - where are you hoping to get with it? Are you going to target a particular niche? I don't really see the sense in trying to build a 'general' search engine. Your chance of competing with heavyweights like Google is somewhere between non-existent and remote, probably a lot closer to the former.
